Cas Marotta is an illustrator and Capricorn who goes to IKEA for fun. Inspired by love, Michigan, and his experience as a transgender person, he seeks to tackle complex narratives with organic shapes and bold colors. His favorite stories to tell are ones that focus on personal relationships in a strange & surreal world.

What do you geek out about?

Cas: I love video games! I’m really bad at them though, and really only care about the plot and making my guy look cute. Naturally, my favorites are Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy XV.

Sweet or salty? Cake or pie? Coffee/tea?

Cas: Coffee out of all of them, for sure! In a perfect world I would constantly have a perfectly hot drink in hand. I started drinking tea so that this could be possible without becoming ridiculously over-caffeinated and jittery; it’s been good, but coffee is still my ride or die.

I think there’s something so wonderful and unlikely about people meeting and becoming friends and falling in love that I can’t help but be a little obsessed with it.

What is your favorite trick for “keeping it all together?”

Cas: I have a little bright yellow notebook that I keep everything in—my schedule, to-do lists, journals, notes, feelings, favorite artists, etc. I’m super forgetful so I have to write everything down, which really helps when I’ve got a lot of projects & thoughts going on all at once.

What or who inspires you?

Cas: The relationships and experiences I’ve had with other people inspire me the most. Anywhere from a guy I walked past three years ago who had a cool baseball cap on to a years-long romantic relationship. I think there’s something so wonderful and unlikely about people meeting and becoming friends and falling in love that I can’t help but be a little obsessed with it.
